Karen Newby

Karen Newby

Highly experienced in many areas, my particular strength is working from BSL to spoken English and I have worked extensively in domains such as mental health, the media, legal and academia.

I studied BSL interpreting at Bristol University, qualifying in 1995 and gaining my full professional status (RSLI) in 1996. I have an A-level in English Language/Literature and a Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA).

In addition to the domains listed, I am well suited to outdoor pursuits and may travel nationally and internationally. I was awarded a Fellowship of ASLI (FASLI) in 2013 for services to my profession.

I have taught interpreting students at City Lit, London, and offer a mentoring service to novice interpreters.

Co-editor of the ASLI best practice guidelines for interpreting in legal settings: https://www.asli.org.uk/app/uploads/2017/05/ASLI-Legal-Interpreting-Best-Practise-LIBP-edited-April-2016.pdf
