Sandy Deo

Obtaining my degree in 2015, I moved to London in 2017 seeking variety and opportunities to expand upon my experience. I have worked at Frank Barnes School on a part time basis since 2017 and am now moving on to work freelance on a full time basis. Since moving to London, I have been fortunate enough to gain experience in a variety of settings which can only stand me in good stead. I have a good knowledge base of the deaf education system, SEN provision and social services, including child protection as I have interpreted a lot of these meetings and forums. I have worked in office, retail, film, and media based environments and am continuing to work with the RSC and their deaf actors which has been a fantastic experience, working backstage during R&D as well as during rehearsals, press nights and tours. Working with smaller theatre companies such as Deafinitely Theatre has been great, and I have been lucky enough to work with them in a range of capacities, whether it is board meetings, general meetings or rehearsals. More recently, I have ticked off one of my personal goals which was to go to Glastonbury! I was very happy to be part of the interpreting team in 2019, and also worked at Reading Festival. I thoroughly enjoy working in these environments, but similarly, I am happy working in school environments, offices , conferences etc. 2019 was a very busy year, in that I qualified, volunteered in Nepal at a deaf school, travelled around India as well as coming back and working at Glastonbury a few days later! I am a keen traveller, as well as reader and I’m always looking for ways to improve my skill set as well as increase my knowledge as I think it’s important. I also volunteer for CODA UK and Ireland, and run their summer camp which is a lot of fun. I am keen to expand upon the domains I work in, and am currently booking relevant training courses to do so. I am hoping to eventually gain experience with in-vision, mental health and Sign Video.
